I have learnt to push myself out of my comfort zone

I think that BUSKING@*SCAPE is a very thoughtful and inclusive initiative. I love that anyone is given the opportunity to busk without going through auditions/getting a busking card etc. It has brought me a lot of joy and I am grateful it.

Tell us more about yourself.
My name is Keona. I recently completed my ‘O’ Levels and graduated from Presbyterian High School. I currently am working part-time at Guzman Y Gomez and busk when I can.

How did you develop an interest in busking?
I’ve always been passionate about performing and used to perform for school events a lot since primary school. As much as I would be nervous to get on stage and pull off what I had been practicing, I always secretly hated the feeling of when it was over. I wished I could go on; I loved the idea of busking for the very fact that I can.

Are there any challenges or highlights you’d like to share with us?
Initially, it was hard for me to watch people walk right past me while I sang my heart out. It is rather disheartening.

What are your goals for 2020?
I hope to gain more confidence as a performer and to busk more often. I also hope to open new doors to more performance opportunities.

What are your most memorable moments while busking at *SCAPE?
I think the most memorable moments are when people stop to listen and then connect with me through Instagram. Their support means a lot to me and it’s always so nice to know that there are people who appreciate what I do. Furthermore, I’ve also been able to reconnect with old friends who happen to be at *SCAPE as well and that too is very memorable.

What is your biggest takeaway from this experience?
I feel the biggest takeaway would be that I can still have fun making music even when I’m the only one listening.

What are some of the positive changes you have experienced or became aware of after participating in BUSKING@*SCAPE?
I have learnt to push myself out of my comfort zone by taking up these 2 hour slots of performing in public. It pushed me to practice more which helped me gain confidence as a performer and a person.
