Filmmaking is not a solo job, it is a collaborative effort

The biggest challenge in filmmaking is finding the right people. Whether it is a partner, crew member or actor.

I’m a graduate from NTU ADM and I major in filmmaking. For the past three years, I’ve been doing a ton of editing and now I’m a full-time freelance producer, director and editor. I focus on packaging an entire video all the way from its pre-production to the delivery. Currently, I do corporate, variety and TVC. But, as a narrative trained student, I always make time for my narrative short films.

Ever since graduation, I’ve submitted two of my short films to NYFA 2016 and one to an open category organised by a family law firm. I won that competition and the NYFA ones for Best Sound Mixing and Editing. As a freelancer, recognition and recommendation is important when engaging with clients to direct produce or even edit. As a young director/producer when someone comes and engages with me, it is quite a good opportunity for me to grow, learn and broaden my experience and exposure.

I have been in the corporate world for almost 2-3 years now, but for 2019, I want to make short films and write a couple more narrative/experimental scripts. It is to bring me back to where I started, where I realised my love for filmmaking and to remind myself that I’m not just a corporate person. I also want to open up my own production house by the end of 2019 or in 2020.

The biggest challenge in filmmaking is finding the right people. Whether it is a partner, crew member or actor. Everybody in a production team is important because filmmaking is not a solo job, it is a collaborative effort. Hence, the biggest challenge is finding the right person.

For my own production house, I’m still on the lookout for a partner. I have a couple of friends who plan to work on more projects before we obtain the chemistry to open up a production house together. Broadening our network is extremely important as so many people can give you advice and share their experience.

As a freelancer, due to lack of experience of managing myself, I keep taking up concurrent jobs and overloading myself. I need to learn how to manage my time well and know when to reject projects and be firm. I want to be able to put in my 100 per cent and not split my attention for different projects.
