How did your esports journey start?
I would say that the Events and Commentary Mentorship (ECM) which was organised by *SCAPE, is where my esports journey started. Before that, I was a casual gamer who followed StarCraft 2’s esports scene from time to time, and knew a few big names. Getting to learn from mentors from the very industry has been enlightening as it shed light on the happenings behind the scenes of the esports tournaments which I watched like ESL StarCraft 2. I am currently into Mobile Legends with an acceptable ranking, but I feel that there are more things that I would need to learn from the game.
What led you to venture into esports commentary?
Before venturing into esports commentary, I had experiences of being a Toastmaster and an emcee in Singapore Polytechnic. So I have always been interested in speaking to the masses, because the thing that really drives me to be an emcee or a public speaker, was to entertain my audience. From then, it piqued my interest to start listening to commentaries in StarCraft 2 tournaments. The commentator who really attracted me is PiG and I would say that he is my inspiration for trying to venture into esports commentary.
This also reminded me that once, I had the chance to organize a small scale League of Legends tournament event in Singapore Polytechnic which I thoroughly enjoyed. So I have been looking forward to my next esports event ever since.
What are your thoughts on being a commentator for PVP Esports Corporate Championship?
Honestly, I am pretty nervous about it because this will be the first time that I am doing official esports commentary. But I have the experienced mentors at the Events and Commentary Mentorship (ECM) programme to thank. It’s not easy to curate a programme like this to teach about commentary in two days. I am grateful that ECM opened a door of opportunity not just for me, but everyone else who has also attended.
I am excited to face the challenge of commentating for the PVP Esports Corporate Championship. It’s like something out of the ordinary that a person can do. Unlike just you know, living my life, paying my bills and that’s all.
How is your preparation for the PVP Esports Corporate Championship coming along?
I have been watching a lot of videos from past tournaments as reference to commentating an esports tournament. I have a better gauge now in what to look out for especially after attending ECM. So I hope I’m doing fine, but I’m definitely looking for more ways to improve my skills until the championship day.
What do you think about *SCAPE giving youths the platform and opportunity to gain industry experience?
I think *SCAPE has been doing a great job with it’s programmes. Without programmes like the ECM, I wouldn’t have thought of fulfilling my dream of being a shoutcaster for an official tournament. And I do know that *SCAPE has other programmes as well, I attended a talk for entrepreneurship months ago where two buskers and a fashion designer were invited to share their experience and journey. It was a fruitful session as people do benefit from the networking gained in such programme.
Youths have always been the gem of our society. During my secondary and polytechnic days as a youth mentor, I have seen many unpolished gems out there who are just waiting to be discovered by the industry and I really am grateful for what *SCAPE has done.
